Hands-off deployment and management of
PC labs and classrooms.

As a resource manager for computer classrooms or labs, you're the one who should be in control. Instead, much of your time is spent running around, installing software, tripping over cables and manually resetting machines. Suddenly you realize that the computers are controlling you instead of you controlling them.

As the industry's premier computer classroom and lab automation software, LabExpert provides you with outstanding control over these resources. LabExpert lets you manage all networked computers from a single console anywhere on the network. From your computer, you are in control.

LabExpert helps you control costs as well. Many companies invest large sums of money to develop labs and classrooms for testing and training, yet fail to control setup and on-going administration costs. Lab personnel, for instance -- highly educated, highly paid professionals -- spend much of their time completing redundant tasks, such as installing and configuring software, one computer at a time.

LabExpert not only reduces overall administrative costs, it allows you to devote your time and energy to real challenges. Allowing more time for lab design, test analysis and program planning for example, optimizes your efficiency and accuracy. With LabExpert you get all of the following and more.

Fast installation and configuration of Windows 95/98 and NT

Disk images stored centrally for instant restoration anytime

Easy cleanup or configuration of an entire student labs/classrooms in minutes

Restoration of corrupt PCs in classrooms and student labs without interrupting the class

Automated turnaround of classroom setups providing more classes per day

Hands-off configurations through scheduled processes allowing you to go home at night, every night, night-after-night!

Support for source and target disks of different sizes and geometryies

A Windows console interface (similar to the Windows Explorer)that supports drag and drop

Easy-to-use command-line scripting to reduce your workload

LabExpert Licensing
LabExpert is licensed in a variety  of ways. Choose the license that best meets your needs.

Top of Page

Per Node License -- All LabExpert node licenses are sold on a  "per computer" basis. The per node license allows the specified number of  PCs to be imaged (cloned) and configured. Licensed PCs may be imaged once or multiple times. Once a  computer has been imaged, the license may not be transferred to another  PC. For example, if a customer needs to image two hundred (200) classroom PCs in four (4) classrooms, he/she would  purchase a 200-node license. A 50-node license cannot be used to image 200  PCs even if only 50 PCs are imaged at a time. All Altiris node licenses  are "additive" in nature in that they may be combined with a license of a  similar product and version to achieve almost any desired node level. For  example, two 100-node licenses may be combined to form a 200-node license.

Site License -- Site Licenses are sold on a "per site" basis and  are restricted for use at a single, contiguous, physical location. A  customer, such as a PC manufacturer, system OEM, system integrator,  channel assembler or IS department, with multiple sites must purchase a  separate license for each site. Any number of computers can be imaged  (cloned) and configured under a site license.

For additional information about pricing for the various licenses or for information  about Altiris' Academic (education) licensing options please contact an Altiris Channel Partner or the Altiris Sales  Department.

LabExpert Features and Benefits

Top of Page

The GUI Control Console
LabExpert provides a Windows-based graphical user interface to a powerful set of lab control tools and to all your lab resources. The Lab Control Console lets you reboot any or all of the computers in the lab, control each computer's processor during the next boot sequence and execute batch files, applications or tools.

You can run LabExpert's 32 bit windows console on any Windows 95/98 or NT PC.

Remote Access
The Lab Control Console can be setup and executed from any PC with a connection to the network.  So, whether you're wandering the aisles, the campus or the country, you can log in and take charge.

ImageBlaster™ Agent
The ImageBlaster Agent allows you to take a target disk that has been configured with the software  you want to install on other workstations, and create a image of it. Once the image is created,  the ImageBlaster Agent does the rest. In a matter of minutes, the image is sent across the  network and installed on your target computers.

Exact Duplication
Precise re-creation of a system's environment is imperative for accurate regression testing,  benchmarking and classroom setup. LabExpert allows you to effortlessly create a master disk  image and ensures that all computers on the network are identically configured with that image.  Whenever you need your computers configured based on a previous setup, LabExpert makes an exact  duplication.

Built-In File Compression
Once you have created a disk image, you can use it over and over again. These images are files  which can be catalogued, compressed and stored on-line for future use. Because image files can be  large, LabExpert has a built-in compression capability that reduces the overall size of the image.

Disk Drive Independence
Not many computer labs or classrooms have all the same computer types. In fact, computer disk  drives often vary widely in size and capacity, similar to real-world business environments.  But this isn't a problem for LabExpert as long as the target disk drive is large enough to  accept the image.

File Systems Independence
LabExpert is fully file-system independent. It handles any PC file system including all Fat  file systems, HPFS, NTFS and NetWare®, to name a few.

BootWorks™
An important and unique capability of LabExpert is controlling the boot sequence for each computer  on the network. BootWorks determines whether a computer boots from its local hard drive or from  the network. When booting from the network, you control which tools and other software is loaded during  that boot sequence. Special tasks can be assigned to the computers, new software installed, etc.  Once the computers are configured and ready, you send a command to reboot. The next time the computers  come up, they boot with the desired configuration.

The Registry Manager
Windows uses a unique set of files called the registry. It contains data describing the computer's  hardware and software environment. This poses a problem when creating an image on one computer and  sending it to different types of computers on the network. The Registry Manager solves this problem  by creating a library of each computer's registry file. Once the computers are imaged, the Registry  Manager then restores the appropriate registry file to its respective computer. All this is done  from a single point on the network, the Lab Control Console.

Protocol Support for IP and IPX
The ImageBlaster Agent component of LabExpert now supports both IP and IPX protocols for  multicasting image data to multiple slaves. To make it easier and most efficient, the  ImageBlaster Agent contains its own IP stack. It is not reliant on the protocol stack you are  using to communicate with a network server.

IP support is complete in LabExpert and allows you to use the Remote Control Agents over IP  providing complete freedom from proprietary protocols.

Image Explorer
Altiris ImageExplorer allows you to view and make modifications to image files created and used  by Altiris' products. You can view information about partitions and files contained within such  an image file, and can extract files from the image, delete fields, search for files, temporarily  ignore and even replace files within the image. All these features can be accessed via standard  Windows menus, toolbar buttons, hotkeys and context menus (right-clicking on an item).

BootWorks Disk Wizard
A fully automated network boot disk maker eliminates the need to manually acquire and configure  so many different network and application specific components. The previous command MAKEDSKW.EXE  has been replaced by BOOTWIZ.EXETop of Page
