Beat the Clock
The name says it all here. This is a game designed to boost your level of vocabulary, by giving you a definition of a word, which you must type in the box.
However, you don't have time to sit and think for ever about the word, because you're playing against the clock. The quicker you can guess the word which is defined in front of you, the better the score you get, so
hurry up!
The program is divided into six levels, from beginner to advanced, and tests you on all parts of English vocabulary:
- · Nouns
- · Verbs
- · Adjectives
- · Phrasal Verbs
- · Idioms
Okay, so it can test my English, but how can I learn more vocabulary?
Play the game the first time, and you will get a score at the end of it, which corresponds to the number of seconds per definition. Play it again, and your
aim will be to get more correct answers in a quicker time. Try again and decrease your time again. Before you know it, you'll have learnt the definitions so well that you'll type the correct word almost instantly.
And what does that mean? Well, it means that you've learnt 100 new pieces of vocabulary and had fun at the same time. This program has 3300 different items of vocabulary on it - an average English language
coursebook will hope to cover maybe 500 vocabulary items.
Teachers can adapt and add to the program content to create the perfect self-access supplement to their English courses.
